Frugal Countdown to Christmas...Day 21...Mint Body Scrub

I'm a bit of a mint fan! Since I was a kid my favourite Ice cream has been Mint Choc chip! So I apologise in advance if I share a few too many mint flavoured treats over the next few weeks.  Today's treat is not to eat, but a delicious minty body scrub, perfect for the Christmas season. Costing less than $5 to make, it's perfect as a gift or just for yourself.

Here's what you need to make it....
1/2 cup Coconut Oil
2 1/2 cups white sugar
1 Tblsp peppermint extract
1 small drop green food colouring

Here's how to make it...
Put coconut oil in a microwave safe dish & melt in the microwave for 15 seconds.
Stir in sugar, peppermint extract & food colouring, until well combined.
Place in an air tight jar.

Recipe found at love grows wild

I got this jar from Kmart for $2.50. Perfect to store any type of scrub in.

Frugal Countdown to Christmas...Day 22...Snowball Cookies

I shared this recipe last year in the Countdown to Christmas, but they are my absolute favourite Christmas treat. I started going out with my husband  a little over 16 years ago and given that it was 2 months before Christmas, it was not long before I met his extended family. I remember being introduced to snowball cookies that very 1st Christmas and I loved them!  Last year was the first year that I finally cooked them myself. They are so yummy and they melt in your mouth. They are one of the things that I look forward to eating every Christmas. The great thing about this recipe, is that you can make it a month in advance and freeze it in an airtight container and it is still as delicious as when they are first cooked. Also it costs under $5 to make...yay!!

So folks, here is the recipe.....

     Ingredients
1 cup unsalted butter at room temperature
1/2 cup pure icing sugar
1 tsp vanilla
2 cup flour
1/4 tsp salt
Pure icing sugar for rolling

      Instructions
Preheat oven to 190 degrees Celsius.
Line a tray with baking paper.
Mix butter with 1/2 cup icing sugar and vanilla with electric mixer until fluffy.
Add flour and salt until dough comes together.
Roll into 1 Tbsp size balls and place on tray.
Bake 7-8 minutes, until bottoms are just slightly brown.
Fill small bowl with icing sugar.
Roll each ball until covered.
Place on rack to cool.
Once cooled, roll again in powdered sugar.

If there is one treat you make this Christmas, then it definitely should be these! You won't regret it!!

Enjoy!

Countdown to Christmas...Day 23...Christmas Sprinkle Cookies

At Christmas time I love everything to be Christmas themed. I’m one of those crazy Christmas obsessed people! These cookies are really basic but with Christmas sprinkles, they become completely Christmassy. As much as I love all the fancy Christmas goodies, I love for my kiddies to have some Christmas treats that they will enjoy too. So here is the recipe for Christmas sprinkle cookies....

INGREDIENTS

115g butter, softened
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup light brown sugar, packed
1 large egg
2 Tbls milk
1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
1 3/4 cups plain flour
2 tsp cornflour
1 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp salt
3/4 cup Christmas sprinkles plus additional sprinkles for the tops of the cookies

DIRECTIONS:

1. In a large bowl, mix  the butter, white sugar & brown sugar together until well combined.
2. Add the egg, vanilla and beat until well combined.
3. Add in the milk, and beat again until combined.
4. Next add the flour, cornflour, baking soda & salt and beat on low speed until just combined.
5. Add in the sprinkles, and beat on low speed until just combined.
6. Scoop cookie dough out (about the size of a large tablespoon) and roll into balls. It is a little sticky but I still found rolling them the easiest way to get a good shape. With this size you should get about 28 cookies.
7. Place them on a tray covered in baking paper, a few cm apart. Note that they will spread out. Cover & place them in the fridge to chill for 3 hours.
8. Turn on oven & set to 190 degrees Celsius.
9. After they are chilled, flatten them out & sprinkle with additional sprinkles.
10 . Place in oven for 8 minutes and once removed from the oven, transfer to a cooling rack.

 Enjoy

Countdown to Christmas... Day 24...Christmas Felt Garland

Welcome to the Frugal Countdown to Christmas! Today I will be sharing how to make a Christmas felt garland. This is a fun, easy & very frugal Christmas decoration. It costs under $5 to make!!

Here is what you will need....
* 1 piece of each of red, green & white felt
* White cotton
* Sewing machine
* A circle shaped object in the desired size of your choice, scissors & a pen (If you have a machine that cuts circles, then you could also use that).

Here is how to make it....
1. Trace 10 circles on each piece of coloured felt and cut out. You should have a total of 30 circles.
2. Line up the first circle so that the stitching line will go directly through the middle of the circle. And then start sewing. Although it is only a cotton stitch holding the garland together, it is surprisingly strong.

 3. When you get to the end of the first circle, ensure that the needle remains in the felt. Lift the foot and insert the second piece of felt, so that it is completely butted up against the first. Release the foot back down and continue sewing. Do this until every piece is sewn in the order of your choice.

You can also make them in whatever colour you like, not just for Christmas.

Drape it over anything you like, or hang on the wall as a decoration. You can also wrap it around your Christmas tree, in place of tinsel.

Enjoy!

Money Mondays....Why Meal planning saves us money

I hosted a Baby Shower at my house a few weeks ago and while I was mingling, I noticed that some of my friends had their heads in my pantry for quite a while.
When I finished talking, I went over to check out what was so interesting and apparently it was my meal plan!!  There is absolutely nothing exciting or special about my meal plan, but it wasn’t something that my friends did, so they thought that I was super organised by having one. The main reason that I write a meal plan is not because I’m super organised (if you know me well, you know that is not the case at all). I write one because it saves me money. I have only started writing one this year as we have become particularly serious about saving more money and not wasting it on food that we don’t end up eating.

Here is why it saves us money
1. Writing a meal plan enables me to write a detailed shopping list. This means that when I’m at the supermarket I don’t buy things that I don’t need to.
2. I try to use ingredients that overlap, so there is no wastage. So for example,  I don’t want to buy mushrooms if I’m not going to use them up. So I might have a stir-fry and a pie in the same week. Completely different meals but it means that I’m not throwing out food that goes bad before I get to use it.
3. I shop weekly and have a weekly food budget but I write a monthly meal plan. Now I know that probably sounds ridiculous but there is method in my madness. If I know what I’m having in 2 weeks time and  It’s something that I see on special, then I grab it.

Here is an example of our meal plan. We are not fancy cooks or eaters by any stretch of the imagination.
I only have to cook 5 nights a week, as we eat at church on a Sunday night and we order pizza on a Tuesday night as we have a bunch of teenagers over for Bible Study.
Friday's we are at Youth Group, so it's always a quick & easy dinner...and if I'm really unorganized on that night it turns into toast....oops!!

If you would like to use these free printable's, they are available at

These are super simple things but they really do save so much money.

Money Monday....Budgeting app!

Today for Money Monday I wanted to share with you the budgeting app that we use. In our budget we literally account for every dollar that we spend. For example if we go shopping and the kids want donuts (their favourite shopping treat), then that $6 gets documented. We are on a exciting journey to become debt free, so we have put together a budget that fits not only our income but also our goals.

Although I love all things budgeting, I’m too busy to use any system that is really time consuming or complicated. This app that I found earlier this year is a little bit like an electronic envelope system. We personally don’t deal in cash a lot, so it works fabulously for us. One thing that we don’t use this app for is our bills. You definitely can put them in, but we have all our bills come out of a bills account, that an allocated amount of money gets put into every week. So for us, we use this app for all spending money.  Because we like to keep things really simple & un-complicated, we only use 3 categories:
*Groceries – Records all our grocery spending
*Petrol –Records our petrol
*Entertainment & Eat out – Records all of our spending that does not fit into the above 2 categories and is not a loan or bill. So that is everything from clothing, shoes, birthday presents, Christmas presents, holidays, house renovations, take out etc, etc.

The app is called "Track My Spend" by ASIC's Money Smart.
Here are some pictures of the app (these are images from the net, so are not my personal information),  which will help me explain all the different features.

Along the bottom of the app, you have 5 tabs...Expenses, Summary, Favourites, History & Settings. Head to the Settings tab and you will come to the above page. This is where you enter your spending cycle, Spending limit (where you can enter amounts for each category) and a few other details. Once that is set up, all you need to do is enter the details when you make a purchase.

The Expense tab (pictured above left) shows how much you have spent in total and how much you have left in your budget overall. When you want you add a purchase, go to the expenses tab and hit the "add new expense" button and you will be directed to the picture below. After you enter the amount & description, you choose the category that it was spent from. If you want to see how much you have spent in each category, head to the summary tab and you will see a page like the one pictured above on the right. It shows you how much you have spent out of each category and how much you have left.

The History tab lists all the things that you have purchased in date order and also includes the category that it was spent from.

And that is it in a nutshell. It is super easy to use and having it on your phone is very convenient.

This app is free to download, so why not give it a try and see if it works for you!

Money Monday's...Is your clutter costing you money??

The other day I went into the garage to put some next size up clothes into a storage box that I have for my littlest munchkin. It’s a massive box because I never say no to second hand clothes that my friends and family are getting rid of.  I know exactly where the box is and it is the only box of clothes I store in the garage....well so I thought! I found another box. Knowing that I am not someone who would keep 2 massive boxes of the same size clothes, I started to go through it. I was so disappointed! All of the clothes were the size that she is wearing now or she has already grown out of. Some were gorgeous clothes that her big sister had worn. They had been passed down to both my nieces and have come back again. They were my absolute favorites! And then there were gorgeous brand new clothes that I had bought while I was pregnant with her, still all with the tags on. The entire box was all things that I had completely forgotten about and all things that I had paid to buy again because I didn't realise that I had.

This is not the first time this sort of thing has happened to me. I have forgotten about clothes that I owned and bought more. I have wasted money on food because my fridge is so messy that I can’t see what is at the back and things get lost and then need to be thrown out. Then there is the furniture and storage systems that I have paid for to house all my stuff. And I know for a fact that I am not the only person that lives like this. So it got me thinking...How much does clutter cost people??

Here are some statistics I found....

* Planet storage reported
 - We wear 20% of the clothes that we own 80% of the time.
- The average person spends 12 weeks a year looking for items they own but can’t find.
- Eliminating Clutter cuts housework by 40% in the average home!
- A typical house contains $1600 worth of unused clutter.

*Harris Interactive reported that 23% of adults say they pay bills late (and incur fees) because they loose them.

*Agency Sales magazine reported that 80% of what we keep we rarely use.

*The State of Waste of Australia reported that up to 40% of the average household garbage bin is food. For The average Australian household $1,036 of food is thrown away each year.

It is pretty clear that clutter costs time and money.
Do you have too much clutter? What is your clutter costing you??
